Another wonderful summer of discovery in Minnesota has come to a close, and our attention turns to gratitude. We welcomed hundreds of students on summer courses that helped them develop a sense of belonging, strength and purpose. This life-changing work would not be possible without the unwavering support of our most generous donors. Thank you!
We also know that none of this meaningful adventure and self-discovery would happen without the best staff in the universe. In this issue, you’ll discover how our amazing current and former staff are carrying forward lessons learned at VOBS to enhance their own lives and make a positive difference for others. From physical engagement and mentorship to philanthropy, each has a unique story that illustrates the power of VOBS to provide a guidepost for life.
While we’re on the topic of compassionate, skilled and intrepid staff… this season we say a bittersweet farewell to Suellen "Sully" Sack, Director of Program and Safety, who is moving on after 27 years of exemplary VOBS leadership. She has taken our programs to new heights, ensuring the utmost safety, challenge and discovery on every course. If you would like to share your appreciation of Sully, please fill out this tribute form.
Your support is more important than ever as we provide scholarships that eliminate financial barriers to participation, invest in our unparalleled staff, strengthen our programs and steward our land and resources. Thank you for your continued support of VOBS. We hope to see you at our upcoming event (featured below). Together, we are creating a more compassionate and resilient world.

FROM A PLACE OF GRATITUDE Nichole Young's Story

Former VOBS instructor Nichole Young has taken lessons she learned through her Outward Bound experience into her life and into her career in adoption and foster care services. Nichole is confident that VOBS changed her life in profound ways. "Outward Bound gave me the belief that not only could I do anything, I SHOULD go out and do more," she said. "The greatest impact for me was being able to be a mentor—in some cases the only trusted adult—in a kid’s life. If you have an impact on just one kid, there’s magic in that."
TWIN CITIES CENTER INSTRUCTOR OMAR "CITO" SANTOS-VEGA HONORED
Omar "Cito" Santos-Vega, first-year instructor at VOBS Twin Cities Center, was awarded the Lt. Col. Mark Weber Service Above Self Award for leadership and outstanding service in August.
Nominated by his peers, Cito is known as a team player who always puts students first, bringing positivity, humor and a "can do" attitude to every task.
Former VOBS staff members Linda Ganister and Sue Duffy believe in the power of Outward Bound to change lives. Their own VOBS experiences introduced them to the importance of fitness, stewardship and compassion–values that remain pillars of their lives today. Together, they have created a VOBS scholarship for teens who otherwise would not be able to experience the outdoors in this special way.
"Philanthropy is all about helping others achieve," Linda said. "If you’ve made your way, it’s time to help others do the same." Sue agrees, and added, "Outward Bound has a way to help people be the best people they can be. Our world right now needs a lot more people to go to Outward Bound."
Our distinguished speakers will pull back the curtain and show you how our courses are designed to build the skills, competencies and confidence that provide life-long impact.
