Self-Discovery and Something Tremendous
I am amazed by each person’s journey to Outward Bound. The transformation on course is equally amazing, but it strikes me that the pathway to our courses, is, in a way, part of the course curriculum itself. The commitment to adventure, to improving oneself and embarking on the unknown is what brings students to Outward Bound. As alumni, you call your Outward Bound journey, “life-changing,” and I couldn’t agree more. Your stories enhance my life and our work; you help us re-commit to our mission every day. In the last issue of “The Spark” we focused on what VOBS means to you. This issue, I’m excited to share the journey of Deb Billings—Voyageur Outward Bound alum and first time donor. Deb’s story will surprise and inspire you.
Deb took a VOBS 8-day canoe trip in the 90s and to this day, she is still in touch with her course brigade. More than 20 years later, Deb described her course experience to me in great detail, revealing that she had “accomplished something tremendous” and “life-changing.” Deb’s story starts well before her Expedition. A self-proclaimed “late bloomer,” Deb was a college student in her 40s when she came across Outward Bound founder, Kurt Hahn. Inspired by Hahn’s educational philosophy, Deb decided Outward Bound was for her. Deb finally did go on course, but getting there was also an unbelievable adventure. No spoilers! Read Deb’s amazing story for yourself here on our blog.

I am proud to partner with Deb to share “Something Tremendous,” and to work for an organization that serves “tremendous” people with challenge and discovery. If you have a VOBS story you would like to share, I'd love to hear from you!

Thank you for Attending Our Open House!

Thursday, May 11th more than 50 VOBS supporters came together at our Twin Cities Center (TCC) Open House in St. Paul. Our Director of Group Programs and TCC, Poppy Potter shared the history of the center and how it all started, our Executive Director, Jack Lee talked about how the TCC is a vital part of our overall VOBS mission, and our Program Director, Dan Stark shared how our programs make a difference for youth in our community.

With your support, we are able to immerse urban young people in outdoor experiential education: experiences through which they discover that they have what it takes to succeed and contribute in school and in life.  Thank you for providing discoveries like this to happen for our youth.

For photos and a recap of the event, check out our blog post here.

If you’d like to share feedback about the Open House, have questions about our programs or just want to come on in and visit, please send me an email: Courtney.Kupsch@vobs.org or give me a call: 651.401.0635.
