Spring staff training is wrapping up at our Twin Cities Center this week and has concluded at our wilderness base in Ely; our first summer courses launched earlier this week! After many months of dedication and planning for a full summer season, we officially have students in the field, and it feels REALLY good.
While things may look a bit different than in years past due to COVID-19, having instructors back on base, seeing students discover belonging, find strength and deepen their sense of purpose is why we're here. And we're ready to take on all that summer has to offer!

VOBS is pleased to revive partnership with a Twin Cities institution this summer -- City Academy. City Academy has the distinction of being the first charter school in the nation. They've been innovating for St. Paul students since 1992, delivering high school education for students seeking a hands-on and supportive approach to learningand leadership. A crew of City students will discover belonging, strength and purpose on the Superior Hiking Trail for six days this summer.
City's Vision: We are here to be life-long learners, be learner supportive, be advocates for positive change, create positive connections, and to foster respect.
"VOBS has worked with students in Minnesota since 1964. A year later, we were the first school to work with female-identifying people (today, over half of our staff are female-identifying). We’ve been inviting students to go Outward Bound in Minnesota, and in Texas, for a long time, and this month, we celebrate an important milestone, and evolution in our interdependent educational model. This 50-day wilderness canoeing and backpacking course, in the pristine wilderness of the Boundary Waters, is ideal for young adults engaging in potentially risky behaviors, struggling with low self-image, not living up to their potential and/or demonstrating poor decision-making skills. Within the structure of a wilderness expedition, students experience the thrills of adventure, the satisfaction of a hard day’s work and the camaraderie of a supportive team in a classroom unlike any other.
