Democracy Prep Texas Big Bend Backpacking Expedition - 2022
Greetings VOBSters,
We're in our final month of the winter season, and despite Phil seeing his shadow, predicting another six weeks of winter, the smell of spring is in the air.
"Spring work is going on with joyful enthusiasm." -John Muir
As one season wraps up, we reflect on all that has happened in these last few months; all the students who experienced challenge and discovery as they dog sledded through the peaceful Boundary Waters of Minnesota or backpacked in the tranquil yet rugged desert of Big Bend, Texas and all the instructors and field staff who set them up for success. At the end of this month, we will set our sights on preparing for the busy summer season. There is a LOT to look forward to and we can't wait to share our journey with you along the way.
Gratefully, Your VOBS Crew

"Days are getting longer and we are busy enrolling summer and fall students. Last month, the VOBS team took time to engage around our 2022 Annual Plan. We shared these priorities and goals with our community in February. If you’re unfamiliar with an Annual Plan, think of it as a “road map” for VOBS. The VOBS Annual Plan lays out our shared organizational priorities and goals, and scopes a budget and strategy for doing the work, realizing the revenue, securing the funding and employing the people."
Designed to help families rebuild strong, healthy relationships, this expedition is ideal for young adults engaging in potentially risky behaviors, struggling with low self-image or not living up to their potential.
Students begin the journey with a 3-week canoe expedition, onto a week-long transition phase where they touch base with their families. Students then help plan and prepare for a multi-week backpacking and North Canoe expedition ending with a family conference.
