Empowered to be mentors

Hello , My name is Courtney Kupsch, and I wanted to introduce myself as the new Director of Development at Voyageur Outward Bound School.

I join this incredible team, and remarkable organization with over ten years of experience leading fundraising efforts, communication plans and serving on nonprofit committees.
Throughout those ten years I have fostered a belief that everyone deserves a chance to feel successful, and organizations like Voyageur Outward Bound School provide that opportunity. They strive to help people of all ages to actualize their goals, build confidence, and grow through life-changing outdoor endeavors. These experiences would not be possible without your support.

Recently, I was moved by a story involving our partnership with Open World Learning (OWL). Dave Gundale, the Principal at OWL initially contacted us because he was concerned about a group of his students that were repeatedly sent to his office for behavioral issues and were at risk for potential suspension. He was looking for an opportunity to empower these students to be leaders, and since taking part in our programs, he does not see these students in his office anymore.

Last fall, the OWL students went backpacking on the Superior Hiking Trail on the North Shore of Lake Superior.

In the photos featured below, you can see the group cooking dinner together, watching the horizon, and hunkering down in their sleeping bags at night.
Along with these pictures, our Program Coordinator, Laura Greenlee shared that, “there is a look on all of the student’s faces that is difficult to describe. It is a look that represents friendship, camaraderie, two years of struggle and success, and of young men who have found a group and a place where they feel comfortable to be whatever version of themselves they need to be in the moment. They represent young men who feel empowered to be mentors to younger students, and feel confident to stand among their peers and be leaders in the most difficult of situations, and to trust that deep down in their bones they are meant to live a great and meaningful life.”

Please consider investing in the future of our students, our community, and our society by contributing to the Voyageur Outward Bound School. Choose to donate today, and you will make a great impact—the ripples of which we will all feel for years to come!
As the Director of Development at Voyageur Outward Bound School, I look forward to sharing more inspiring stories like these as I continue to focus on furthering our mission and impact, developing strong relationships within our community, and providing more opportunities for others to realize “there is more in them than they know."
